3NL - Investigation stations

In science today we decided to investigate some of the life processes of a plant. First we came up with some questions we would like to investigate....

Can a plant have too much water?
What is the function of leaves?
Are leaves important to a plant?
Does it matter how much sunlight a plant gets?
What if a plant has no heat will it grow?

Next in our groups we discussed how we would investigate our questions and how we make sure our tests were 'fair'.

We then got to visit the 'Investigation Shop' to select the equipment we would need.

After that, we made a prediction as to the outcome and decided how we would record our results.

Finally, we set up our investigations.

Year 2 - We know the continents...do you?

Today as part of our topic lesson year 2 learnt about the continents and used atlas to locate them. We used a song Mr Jones taught us in music to help us remember them!

Watch the video of us singing the continent song and locating them on a map.

3NL - Den Day

Den Day

First, 3NL watched a very moving video about why we were supporting Den day and 'Save the Children.'

Next we designed our dens, there were some fabulous ideas!

In the afternoon, the real excitement began and we got to make our dens!!

As you can see they were very good at working them out.

Do you know which are the male and which are the female parts?

4S - Den Day

On Friday 23rd June, 4S took part in 'Den Day' for the charity Save The Children.

The children had to work in groups to build dens from cardboard boxes and other materials!

Y5 French - le verbe être

Today Y5 have begun learning the French verb
être  (which means 'to be').  This is a very useful verb to know!

Je suis = I am
Tu es = you are
Il est = he is
Elle est = she is
On est = one is / we are
Nous sommes = we are
Vous êtes = you (all) are
Ils sont =  they (boys) are
Elles sont = they (girls) are

We learnt a song https://youtu.be/z2IrJ0DB0Xg, and finished off with a quiz about school staff - all in French.
We had fun!  Next week we will continue to use être  to speak and write about famous football players.

À bientôt! (See you soon)

PE - Year 3 and 4 Quad Kids!

Dank je (thank you in Dutch) for the all the parents who cheered us on yesterday at a very hot Quad Kids' event.

We had a great afternoon, plus a fabulous well done to all of our 16 children who did us very proud not only sporting wise but by their impeccable behaviour (as always).

We finished in the top 3 in some of the sprinting and 400m events. See the full results below, (just click the Hornchurch Stadium for your child's year group):

3NL - Literacy

In 3NL we have been studying Explanation Texts.

We made some of our own, on 'How the Loo Works!'

We made sure we included all of the features needed:- opening statement, diagrams, labels, technical vocabulary, interesting facts and some of us even wrote a glossary!

Once we ad finished we presented our work to the rest of the class.

Year 4S - Tag Rugby

Year 4 had a special visitor who taught the children how to play tag rugby. The P.E coach explained the rules of tag rugby and the children were then able to apply their skills to game situations.

As the lesson went on, I noticed an improvement in the children's understanding and skills in the games. Thank you Lizzie!

High 5 Netball festival - Year 6 netball

Last week our Year 6 netball team entered a High 5 netball festival at Redbridge Sports centre.

Year 6 Netball team - Wumi, Donna, Lucy, Ruby, Millie T, Lexi RT (yr5), Megan, Ella, Rocco, Henry,Zain, Reece

When we arrived we found out we had to play against 11 other schools from around East London. We were the only primary school from the borough of Havering.

The rules of a high 5 tournament are that all players must rotate positions. However it certainly didn't phase the players at all who enjoyed it and sometimes played better in a position that was not their own.

The children played outstandingly, they showed skill, determination and sportsmanship. After the 11 matches were over both teams were in a position to do well after we had won the majority of our games. However nothing was certain...

Finally the result was announced and we found out team A came runners up and team B came 7th! What an amazing achievement. We were so proud!

Well done Year 6 netball squad!!

3AK - Tag Rugby!

This morning, we had a specialist PE coach come in for a follow up session on Tag Rugby. We  played a few games in our house colours.

Friday 16 June 2017

3AK - Maths - Nets!

3NL - Greek Salad!

To finish maths week we decided to use our maths skills to make a Greek salad in relation to our topic 'The Mediterranean.'

However, the recipe wasn't as simple as it looked. First the children had to solve the maths clues...

Greek salad

Ingredients

  • I have 70g red onion, thinly sliced, you need ½ of this amount. How much do you need?
  • I have a packet of 6 large ripe tomatoes in a packet, you need 1/3  of this amount. How much do you need?
  • I have 4 cucumbers, you need 1/8  of the cucumber,. How much do you need?
  • I have a packet of feta cheese 200g. You need ½ of this amount. How much do you need?
  • I have 25g of black olives, pitted and drained. You need double this amount. How much do you need?

The children worked in teams to solve the problems before they could begin to make their salad, using measuring scales and cooking utensils to chop and dice the food.

Before they got to take it home and try...

3NL - Star writer

Before half term, we used the Maya creation story as inspiration to write our own imaginative creation stories.

Our star writers were Libby, with a fabulously descriptive piece of writing.

And Aikam with an emotive story. Well done!

4S- Maths

Miss Shah's maths group completed an investigation called 'Frogs'.

The investigation:

There are five brown frogs and five green frogs sitting on their lily pads, as shown:

You have to swap the green frogs with the brown frogs, but - there are some rules.

*Only move one square at a time.

*You can jump only over one frog of a different colour.

*All frogs can only move forwards from the direction they start in.

The children worked in pairs to complete the investigation. We soon realised that the investigation is a lot harder than it seems and really tested our spatial awareness!
